I have a history simular to this author. Not as long, far, richer, poorer or glamorous but I lived a life parallel both on the ground and in the air.I totally understand how he felt thoughout his adventures, the good, the bad and the ugly.
And, not unlike Capt. Doscher, I too finally woke up one day and realized I had been on the edge between adventuresome and suicidal for far longer than anybody I know until I read "Pilot for the King". Capt. Doscher, I did it and I get it.
Now, for the rest of you in the "real world", whether you've been there done that or not, enjoy this book. I couldnt put it down and if you still have a hankering for a real adventure I suggest you do it by way of this read. It's much safer and chances are you will not end up being shot at, in the pokey or worse.
Do yourself a favor and enjoy these adventures.
BTW, if after having read this you still want to "do it" at least you'll know more about what not to do.

Pilot For The King The Story of a Wayward WingMan edition by W Doscher Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
I do not consider myself an avid reader, but I did find this thoroughly enjoyable. Read it over the weekend..couldn't put it down. I found the storyline engaging, interesting, and easy to read. Enjoyed the humor. The last two chapters were the best as Billy endured realistic struggles with pertinent real-life issues while he resolved to live his life for the only True King. To God be the glory. -Bob
I really enjoyed this book. I liked all the adventures this person went through. I felt like I was there with him and how god turned his life around
Aviation in a different light. Inside the contraband/drug running south of the border. First book I've read in a while that I actually finished. Also has an uplifting ending. Well worth the read.
The title threw me off when i first saw it but once you get into the book you find out that the title means something totally different until the end. Nice twist that i really liked.
Mr. Doscher is a great guy as well. Got to meet him at one of the conventions and talked him into an autographed copy for my dad.
As an avid reader of Christian novels, I found this one to be refreshingly different! There are several reasons why I loved Pilot For the King and why I wholeheartedly recommend it to others.
First of all, Pilot for the King isn't predictable or filled with religious jargon. The narrative is believable and true to real life. Like the book of Esther, God is not mentioned throughout most of the book. However,God IS very much at work behind the scenes! This makes the story of Billy Hawklin believable in that many have the same testimony of being able to see God's Hand upon their lives prior to salvation.
Another reason I loved this book is because of the character development throughout the book. It chronicles the life of young Billy and his fascination with flying as a innocent young boy to his dangerous involvement with transporting illegal contraband into other countries. Again his character is believable!I felt as a reader that I could see each and every one of the characters represented from Billy to his boss Ray. I could picture his beer drinking fellow pilots as well as the apt descriptions of the Mexican and Jamaican people that Billy came to know. The chapter on Rob was heartrending.
I also loved Pilot for the King because of the overall excellence of the writing! Once again, as a reader I felt like I was IN the cockpit with Billy as he experienced the many and varied dangerous encounters! I found the descriptions of the Mexican pistas (airstrips)as well as his time in Jamaica extremely fascinating. The book is filled with riveting stories that transport the reader into the midst of a completely different way of life!
Lastly, I LOVED the last two chapters of the book. In fact, I saved it until the next day so that I could fully absorb it. God is His sovereign mercy allows Billy to hit rock bottom. It is then that he experiences the grace and mercy of a loving Heavenly Father. It is an awesome testimony and again very true to real life.
Without reservation, I recommend Pilot for the King! You will be blessed, strengthened and encouraged!
God bother
I really enjoyed Pilot For The King and found it to be a fast read. After the first 50 pages, I read the book within 24 hours over two sittings. The book is a series of youthful and exciting adventures strung together as young Billy plays inside the loopholes of the border laws, re-discovers his morality, and finds his mortality through the school of hard knocks.
It makes sense that the previous reviewer considered the book technical. I can see how this book would appeal to the aviation enthusiast more than others, of which I am one as well. It doesn't matter whether you stare at commercial airliners drawing lines in the sky or go drink beer in a lawn chair next to the local airport, this book has some riveting stories if you ever wondered about ALL the ways to build time in the left seat.
I will read Pilot For The King again and hope there are more stories about Billy Hawklyn. I recommend the book.
....from a guy who lived to tell the tale!
A rollicking ride or maybe flight I should say of some crazy times along our southern border and "elsewhere." The author, an adrenaline junkie and pilot extraordinaire, engages us in the little known world of aerial smuggling of electronics along the Texas border during the early '80s. That in itself is reason enough to buy the book. I love stories of little known adventures.
"As a youth, mortality wasn't a part of my vocabulary." A quote from page 273. How true. Most all young people, even today with heads buried in iPhones and iPads, can relate to that statement but this guy took it to the extreme and asked God for forgiveness and guidance in the book's latter pages. Maybe not from electronics smuggling but from something else he did....for the reader to find out!
A fantastic, fast paced read!
